We are going to see if each compound is soluble in water.
Observations
Copper II Sulfate - There is some blue at the top of the test tube and some blue at the bottom of the test tube. When you turn the test tube upside down, the entire water becomes more blue, but for the most part the blue is at the bottom of the test tube.
Zinc Oxide - The white powder collects at the bottom of the test tube first, but when you turn it upside down the powder immediately becomes very cloudy. So cloudy that you cannot see through it.
Kool- Aid Lab 4/12/11
Question- Does Kool- Aid dissolve faster at different ampounts of water? Hypothesis- The Kool- Aid will dissolve faster with a larger amount of water. Independent Variable- Amount of water Levels-

Dependent Variable- How fast the Kool- Aid dissolves. Constants- Amount of Kool- Aid, water temperature. Procedure- 1. Measure out 2 grams of Kool- Aid three times. 2. Fill 3 graduated cylinders, one with 10 grams, one with 15 grams, and one with 20 grams of water. 3. Time how long it takes for the solute to dissolve 4. Then record observations and time. Observations- The test tube with the most water had a larger white ring around the top of the liquid than the test tube with the least amount of water. Also, the different water levels have different shades of red, with the 10 mL test tube being the darkest red. Here are some pictures from the experiment:

4/26/11- Compounds-
Calcium Chloride: -soluable -not safe -burns can occur in mouth and esophagus Sodium Bicarbonate: -made as a tablet and powder -used to relieve heartburn and acid indigeston -Safe -Some side effects like nausea and headaches Bromothymal Blue: -Harmful is swallowed -Can irritrate eyes or skin with contact
Chemical Combinations 4/27 Question: What combinations of compounds act chemically? Hypothesis: The Bromothymol Blue will react with sodium bicarboniate at lowest temperature. Observations: 1) Sodium Bicarboniate and Bromothymol Blue- Dissolves, gets foggy at bottom of test tube, 26.3 degrees celius. 2) Sodium Bicarboniate and water- Temperature increased quickly, then decreased at 23.3 degrees celius. 3) Calcium Chloride and Bromothymol Blue- White gel/ smooth layer at bottom, different shade of blue at bottom, 21.3 degrees celius. 4) Calcium Chloride and water- Cloudy, then settled, white layer at bottom, 20.8 degrees celius We mixed all the chemicals together and when the forth chemical was added the compound quickly fizzed and began to rise. The colors changed from clear to light blue, then to yellow, and then lastly to white. Here's our powerpoint!!
Mass in Chemical Reactions 5/10 Question-How will the mass of the reactants compare to the mass of the products in a reaction that produces a solid precipitate? Hypothesis-The mass of the reactants will be the same as the mass of the products. Independent Variable-The mass of the reactants (g). Dependent Variable-The mass of the products (g). Constant-Mass of the glassware, same glassware, same balance Check out our video! Watch our video!
Mass in Chemical Reactions that Produce a Gas 5/11 Question- How does the mass of the reactants compare to the mass of the product in a chemical reaction that produces a gas? Hypothesis- The mass of the reactants will be the same as the mass of the products. Independent Variable- The mass of the reactants (g). Dependent Variable- The mass of the products (g). Constants- Amount of glassware, amount of alka-seltzer Procedure- 1)Measure the weight of the glass. 2)Put water and alka-seltzer in. 3)Put cap on right away. 4)Measure the weight after the chemical reaction. 5)Repeat steps 1)-4). Observations- -The reactants and products were about the same weight for each trial. -The alka-seltzer fizzed and bubbled. -After we opened the cap, a little mist came up quickly.
